What is Wet Rot?

Wet rot is caused by a fungus known as Coniophora Puteanam, better known as ‘cellar fungus’. The fungus is attracted to damp areas with a regular source of moisture, which is why it can often be found close to broken pipes, gutters and stone and cement pointing. When the fungus gets into timber, it can lead to fungal spores germinating and growing which causes the timber to lose its strength. Wet rot can cause some serious issues in your home, so it is essential that the issue is addressed.

Clearing Wet Rot

In order to clear and resolve the issue of wet rot, the source of moisture must be found and fixed. The affected area can also be isolated from the source of damp and treated. However, in more extreme cases of damp rot, the affected areas may need replaced. When it comes to fixing wet rot, it isn’t just about the rot, it is vital that the source of the damp is identified and fixed, ensuring that the rot does not return.
